Why use a product roadmap?
A product roadmap communicates your plan to stakeholders, customers, and your team. It shows what you are building, when you plan to build it, and why it matters. Without a roadmap, teams often work on whatever seems urgent rather than what moves the product forward.
Roadmap best practices
Keep your roadmap focused. Three to five items per period is usually enough. Too many items create noise and reduce clarity. Update your roadmap regularly as plans change. A stale roadmap is worse than no roadmap because people stop trusting it.
Use status indicators to show progress. Completed items build trust. In-progress items show momentum. Planned items set expectations. Be honest about status: if something slipped, update the roadmap rather than hiding it.
From roadmap to feature voting
A roadmap shows your plan, but how do you decide what goes on it? Feature voting helps. When users vote on what they want, you get real signal about what to prioritize. Your roadmap becomes data-driven rather than guesswork. Not sure what deserves a slot? Rank your ideas first with the free priority calculator, then drop the winners in here.
